BNSF Chicago Facility

BNSF Railway – Chicago (Corwith) Intermodal Facility

Corwith is one of four BNSF Railway facilities in Chicago and when built in 1887 by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, it was the world’s largest railway yard. In the 1960s Corwith became an intermodal test-bed and industry laboratory for the new concept of intermodal terminal mechanization. It was at this location in 1963 where Mi-Jack predecessor Drott Crane Company’s RTG Travelift Unit No. 1 was first developed.

Today, BNSF Corwith is the third busiest intermodal terminal on the BNSF Network, handling over 860,000 railcar lifts in 2013. During this site visit, attendees will see and learn how Corwith safely provides premium service at this high production intermodal facility including automated gate operation which improve Driver productivity and efficiency, while providing added facility security, inventory management, and equipment inspection.

J.B. Hunt Chicago Facility

J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc. – Chicago Maintenance & Repair and Driver Operations Facility

J.B. Hunt operates North America’s largest fleet of company-owned 53’ domestic containers and one of the largest private drayage fleets. In 1994, the company’s rapid conversion from intermodal trailers to domestic containers and chassis and flourishing partnership with the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway led to the development of a new Chicago truck terminal at the Corwith Intermodal Facility.

Today, the Chicago Maintenance & Repair and Driver Operations Facility located adjacent to the BNSF Corwith terminal is one of the largest in the J.B. Hunt network. During this stop on the tour, attendees will learn about J.B. Hunt’s intermodal and fleet M&R, dray operations, safety procedures and driver training.
