November Volumes Position Intermodal for Strong 2026 Finish

CALVERTON, MD (November 6, 2026) — The Intermodal Association of North America today released the latest reading of its Intermodal Volume Index, a measure of North American intermodal freight activity. The November 2026 estimate of 105.2 is a predicted 2.1 percent decline from October but an 8.0 percent increase from the year prior, underlining the strength of this year’s intermodal volumes.

"November IVI is projected to continue the trend of strong volumes that we've seen in Q4 2026 and further solidifies intermodal's rapid growth year to date. October, once published, will likely end up being a record volume, on par with July," said Andrew Sibold, IANA's Director of Economics.

Against a 2017–19 baseline set to 100, IANA gauges what is happening right now — before the official monthly figures are published. The IVI works by translating high-frequency freight activity onto the same scale as the published index, giving shippers, carriers and analysts an early snapshot of current-month demand. The result is a real-time picture of the intermodal freight economy.
