The Intermodal Safety Committee is responsible for research, data collection, analysis, reporting and fostering adoption of specific operational practices between intermodal transportation stakeholders to address issues relating to safety. Focus areas include, but are not limited to, the safe operation of intermodal facilities and equipment. Also included in committee deliberations are regulatory and compliance issues and how they affect safety and intermodal operations.

Committee Goals:
- Foster a culture of safety in the intermodal community though the sharing of information and recommended practices.
- Collect intermodal safety mishap data, identify trends and report results to the IANA membership.
- Produce an annual intermodal industry safety update that provides insights into the frequency, types and results of container vessel, on-terminal, roadway and railway safety mishaps.
- Research and benchmark industry safety practices and training materials that can best be used to improve situational awareness and reduce intermodal related mishap activity.
- Develop innovative and clearly understood intermodal safety practices.
- Socialize the importance of shared and common intermodal safety practices for intermodal operations through education and awareness promotion.
- Assist members with enhancing regulatory knowledge and compliance.

Building Blocks of Safety Webinars
IANA’s Intermodal Safety Committee presented a second webinar in the series, “Building Blocks of Safety” on November 9, 2023. Presented by ISC Chair, Jason Hunt of Georgia Ports Authority and ISC Vice Chair, Bert Mayo with TrueNorth Companies and featuring Dr, Gina Anderson, CEO of Luma Brighter Learning; the webinar focused on how adults learn and techniques that can be used to ensure safety training is effective for all employees.
IANA’s Intermodal Safety Committee presented the first webinar in the new series, “Building Blocks of Safety” on July 26, 2023. Presented by ISC Chair, Jason Hunt of Georgia Ports Authority and ISC Vice Chair, Bert Mayo with TrueNorth Companies; the team provided examples of policies, procedures and programs and document structures to help organizations minimize risk. Future sessions in the series will focus on training and education, recordkeeping, inspections and audits.
